Acupuncture FAQ

What is acupuncture and how does it work?

Acupuncture is a traditional healing practice that uses fine, sterile needles to stimulate specific points along the body’s energy pathways (meridians). This helps regulate the nervous system, improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and promote the body’s natural healing response. At Somavive Westmount, treatments are gentle, relaxing, and tailored to your unique needs.

What conditions can acupuncture treat?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), acupuncture has been shown to effectively treat over 100 health conditions. It’s commonly used to relieve chronic pain, headaches, migraines, stress, anxiety, insomnia, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, fatigue, and reproductive health concerns. At SOMAVIVE, acupuncture treatments address both the physical and emotional root causes of imbalance to support long-term wellness and vitality.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Most clients feel little to no pain — only a mild tingling or warmth. Treatments at Somavive are gentle and tailored to your comfort level.

Is acupuncture safe, and are needles sterile?

Yes. We use only single-use, sterile, disposable needles. Acupuncture is a safe, evidence-based practice when performed by a qualified acupuncturist.

How many sessions will I need?

Frequency varies based on your condition. Acute issues may improve within 2–4 sessions, while chronic conditions may require a longer treatment plan

What should I expect during my first acupuncture session?

Your first session includes a full consultation, pulse and tongue assessment, and a relaxing treatment. Many people leave feeling calm and centered. Please wear comfortable loose-fitting clothing to every acupuncture treatment.

Can acupuncture be combined with osteopathy or massage?

Absolutely. Acupuncture is a safe adjunctive therapy to most treatment plans. At Somavive, we often combine acupuncture with osteopathy for the most holistic, integrative care.

Are there any side effects?

Mild fatigue or temporary soreness are possible but brief. Most clients feel deeply relaxed after treatment.

Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy or for seniors?

Yes. Acupuncture is adapted safely for pregnancy, postpartum, and all ages.

Is acupuncture covered by insurance?

Most extended health plans in Québec cover acupuncture sessions from registered practitioners like ours at Somavive.
