Osteopathy FAQ

What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a holistic, hands-on form of manual therapy that focuses on the whole body — muscles, joints, organs, and internal systems — to support health and balance. Recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a safe and effective manual therapy, osteopathy works to restore mobility, structural alignment, and circulation, helping the body heal itself naturally while relieving pain and tension.

What conditions can osteopathy treat?

Osteopathy doesn’t directly treat conditions — it works to restore movement and balance in the body. By releasing restrictions and improving circulation, osteopathy helps your system heal naturally and relieve symptoms. People often visit Somavive for back and neck pain, headaches, concussions, joint stiffness, postural issues, and stress-related tension, as well as chronic health complaints like digestive issues, reproductive issues, and neuroendocrine issues.

How is osteopathy different from chiropractic or physiotherapy?

Osteopathy uses gentle, hands-on techniques to assess and treat the root cause of dysfunction. It emphasizes fluid motion and the body’s natural healing ability, rather than using high-velocity-thrust (HVLA) techniques, or relying heavily on exercise and fitness plans.

Is osteopathy safe for everyone?

Yes. We use only single-use, sterile, disposable needles. Acupuncture is a safe, evidence-based practice when performed by a qualified acupuncturist.

What should I wear or bring to my first appointment?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows for movement. No special preparation is needed, but it's best to avoid having a coffee or a heavy meal right before a treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

Every person is different. Acute pain may improve quickly; chronic conditions may require multiple sessions. The longer the condition has been present, the longer the treatment plan is needed.

What can I expect after treatment?

You may feel lighter, more mobile, and relaxed. Mild soreness is normal for 24–48 hours as your body readjusts.

Can osteopathy help with chronic pain or posture?

Yes. Osteopathy helps correct postural strain and chronic musculoskeletal tension by restoring balance and movement.

Is osteopathy covered by insurance?

Yes, most Québec insurance plans cover osteopathy performed by certified practitioners like ours at Somavive.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

No referral is required — you can book directly with our osteopath at Somavive Westmount or Mile End.
